It's obvious that Coleco was looking to further cash in on the mammoth
success of their line of Cabbage Patch Kid dolls with the release of
the Cabbage Patch Kids: Adventures in the Park game for their
Colecovision system. It's just too bad they forgot to actually make it
a good game.
In Cabbage Patch Kids, you take on the role of little Anna Lee. Anna
has gotten lost outside of the BabyLand Park and you must guide her
through the dangerous levels and back to the entrance of the park
before it gets dark. Much like Pitfall, you'll have to run, jump, swing
from vines, and hop across dangerous platforms in order to reach the
safety of the park entrance. As you progress through the levels the
difficulty increases, later on to the point that the game is very
frustrating. You'll also have to deal with inconsistent and
non-responsive play control at times as well.
Adventures in the Park looks fairly sharp, but it's still not enough to
make up for the lack of originality or fun factor that's virtually
nonexistent. The music is catchy and about what you'd expect from a
game that features the Cabbage Patch Kids name on it, but it's nothing
to get too excited about and can become repetitive after awhile.
This game turns out to be little more than a dumbed-down version of
Pitfall with Cabbage Patch Kids inserted into it for consumer appeal.
Unless you're just a diehard Cabbage Patch Kid fan, this is one you
should pass on. There's just not enough playability for most gamers.
