COLECOVISION
VS.
ATARI 5200
Comparing the Colecovision and the Atari 5200 is a complicated matter. Both systems have plenty of power at their disposal, but the various game comparisons generally turn out to be a mixed bag. While most Colecovision versions are superior, a few of the Atari 5200 versions are actually better. Popeye was a very popular multi-platform game that enjoyed a lot of success on quite a number of systems. As you can see from the screenshots, the Atari 5200 version lacks the detail and vivid color usage found in the Colecovision version. The Colecovision version is clearly the better of the two by a good margin. Frogger was another multi-platform hit that made its rounds to most consoles of the time period. This is one of those rare Atari 5200 game titles that's actually superior to the Colecovision version. While the colors aren't nearly as bright and crisp as the Colecovision version, the Atari 5200 version shows a lot more graphical detail, especially on the home bases and logs. It's a shame that the dark and dull look that plagued many Atari 5200 titles clouds what is an otherwise outstanding arcade port. |
