Coleco couldn't have chosen a better pack-in game cartridge for their
new Colecovision system than Donkey Kong, especially given how popular
the arcade game was at the time. Truth be told, it looked as close to
the arcade version as any other release out at the time, and was the
perfect game to show off the power of Coleco's new home game console.
In Donkey Kong, you take on the role of Mario the carpenter, and you
have to rescue your girlfriend Pauline from the clutches of the evil
gorilla Donkey Kong. To do so, you'll have to climb the many girders in
order to reach the top where Donkey Kong is at. You'll have to maneuver
around rolling barrels, fireballs, and Firefoxes along the way. This
simple game design is still one of the best out there and is as
enjoyable as ever.
Visually, the Colecovision version of Donkey Kong looks fairly close to
the arcade version, although there are color differences in places and
the Pie Factory level has sadly been left out. The sound effects are
also pretty authentic in most places, aside from the missing background
music. These few ommisions were mainly made to keep the cart size under
16K.
Donkey Kong will always be considered one of the best arcade games ever
made, and Coleco did a nice enough job with this home version given the
time period and self-imposed cartridge memory limitations. There are
much better versions of the game available today, but this Colecovision
version still holds up fairly well, even all these years later.
