After the mammoth success of Donkey Kong, we all knew a sequel was
coming. Of course we didn't expect it to play so differently. Nintendo
completely revamped the game play for Donkey Kong Jr., but the end
result was pretty much the same. The game still featured unique
level designs and addictive game play just like the original Donkey
Kong.
The Colecovision version of Donkey Kong is extremely close to the
arcade version and Donkey Kong Jr. isn't too far from the coin-op
version itself. Everything looks fairly close to the arcade version and
even the game play itself, love it or hate it, is pretty much identical
to its arcade counterpart. You still have to climb the vines in order
to reach the top where you can grab the key from Mario and rescue
Donkey Kong.
Visually the game features really vivid use of colors and shows a lot
of detail, especially when compared to many of the inferior ports of
the game found on various other consoles. The sound effects are a
little different from the arcade version, but the music itself sounds
like it's coming directly out of the arcade cabinet speaker. It's
unbelievably good. I was dissapointed to see that the Mario's Hideout
level wasn't included here.
Donkey Kong Jr. is everything the original Donkey Kong was and more.
Coleco did an outstanding job in making their Colecovision version look
and play as close to the arcade version as they could, and the end
result is yet another fantastic Colecovision arcade port.
