EXPANSION
MODULE #1
In 1982, Coleco released the Expansion Module #1 for their Colecovision system for a retail price of $59.95. This module would allow you to play most Atari 2600 game cartridges on the Colecovision system. This opened up an enormous library of games to Colecovision owners, but it would also get Coleco slapped with an $850 million dollar lawsuit from Atari. Coleco sold over 150,000 of these Expansion Modules during the first two months following its release. Atari would lose their lawsuit and be unable to stop Coleco from selling the units. This expansion module would continue to be a big seller during the life of the Colecovision console. Over 95% of Atari 2600 game cartridges worked with the Expansion Module #1, but there were a few select games that wouldn't function or wouldn't fit down into the cartridge slot on the unit. Coleco even went so far as to send out a special cartridge, to consumers who called and complained, that would allow some of these games to work with the module, but these were never made available at retail outlets. |
