Rating 6

Moonsweeper made its rounds on the various game consoles and computers of the time period, but the overall experience remained pretty constant throughout the different releases. The game can't decide whether it wants to be a simulation or an arcade-style shoot 'em up, and its overly loose play control can make it much more frustrating than fun to play.

In Moonsweeper, you take control of your galactic spaceship and you have to duke it out with aliens as they swoop down at you from above. You'll even have to fly down to the planet's surface in order to rescue your fellow astronauts while avoiding the many obstacles that are in your way. The only problem with this is that the control response is so sluggish that maneuvering your ship can be very difficult. You'll spend more time crashing into things than actually playing the game.

The Colecovision version of Moonsweeper looks fantastic, with tons of detail in the background. The vivid use of colors is impressive and makes this easily one of Imagic's most visually impressive titles. Unfortunately, the sound effects don't match the game's brilliant graphics, as they remain mostly forgettable and sound like more of an after-thought than anything.

Imagic released some of the best games to come out of this era in gaming, but Moonsweeper isn't one of them. It proves that flashy visuals do not make a good game. Moonsweeper has a lot of potential, but the overall experience is just too sloppy for most players to enjoy.
